The Arabian sailors Villier’s encountered had a pretty tough existence but it was nothing compared to the conditions transported felons were subject to in the 18th and 19th centuries on what were called ‘convict hulks’.
A revealing exhibition at the Hyde Park Barracks Museum displays hundreds of rare convict artefacts recovered from the hulk Dromedary. Intricate hand carvings, military regalia, pewter mugs, chess pieces, guns and some heart-wrenching journals detailing the harsh conditions are just part of the rich treasure unearthed by this amazing underwater excavation.
Try on some leg irons, lie in a convict hammock, step inside a punishment box and uncover haunting stories of Sydney’s convicts between 1819 and 1848.
